Anna Szkoda con il progetto Sirius è tra le vincitrici del PHmuseum Women Photography Grant e si aggiudica una mostra a Fotografia Europea 2020

Il direttore artistico Walter Guadagnini ha selezionato il lavoro della Szkoda con questa motivazione:

In Sirius Anna Szkoda mette in scena un racconto ibrido, a metà tra la finzione e il reale, che ancora una volta reinterpreta il ruolo della fotografia. La narrazione crea un forte legame con lo spettatore, incuriosendolo e incantandolo come un’angosciante favola al telefono. Le fotografie dai toni pacati raccontano la seduzione della fantasia prima di un potenziale crimine con un occhio rivolto verso l’infinito salvifico delle stelle. 

Nel lavoro “Sirius” Anna Szkoda si è dedicata a un caso incredibile, che rasenta la fantascienza e che si è verificato in Germania nei primi anni 80.

Un ragazzo inizia a raccontare storie a una giovane donna: finge di essere un abitante della stella Sirius e cerca di convincerla a diventarlo a sua volta, a patto che lasci il suo corpo umano e la sua vita terrena.
Mentre Scheherazade inventava storie notte dopo notte per salvarsi la vita, il giovane notte dopo notte parla al telefono per togliere una vita. Per motivi molto prosaici, l’omicidio pianificato (in realtà suicidio della ragazza) fallisce, e il “caso Sirius” diventa noto come caso studio nel diritto penale tedesco.

Laddove la fotografia è un mezzo usato per provare fatti criminali, una storia fiabesca deve ora circoscrivere gli indefinibili confini tra narrativa e criminalità. Il lavoro di Anna Szkoda è una rinuncia al documentario: in un mondo di manipolazione, la macchina fotografica può essere complice nel catturare illusioni?

In Sirius, Anna Szkoda stages a hybrid story between fiction and reality, which once again challenges photography and its role. She is able to create a strong bond with the viewers, nourishing their curiosity and enchanting them like a distressing telephone tale. Her placid photographs explore the fantasy before a potential crime with a gaze towards the infinite saving grace of the stars.

In the work Sirius Anna Szkoda devoted herself to an incredible case that borders on a sicience fiction story rather than a true incident and has happend in the early 80ies in Germany.

A young man begins to tell a young woman fantastic stories. He himself pretend to be a resident of the star Sirius and she too can get there if she only leaves her human body and her life insurance behind on earth. As Scheherazade makes up stories night after night to save her life, so the young man lies night after night on the phone for years to take a life. For very prosaic reasons, the planned (suicide) murder to which he manipulates the girl fails, and the “Sirius case” becomes known as a case study in German criminal law.

Where otherwise photography is a reliable medium for determining criminal facts, a fairy-tale story must now circumscribe the indeterminable boundaries between narrative and crime. Anna Szkoda work is a renunciation on the documentary: in a world of manipulation, can the camera be more than an accomplice capturing illusions?
