1– 2. In Scotland I would look to the work of younger photographers, particularly Valentina Bonizzi and Aleksandra Zawada: Bonizzi works on long term projects to produce bodies of works which collectively address issues of transition and temporality, un achievable in one image. Zawada addresses the virtuality of the reproduction of images, like Bonizzi working in series rather than individual works, to question ‘the real’ and the capacity of photography to represent ‘the real’.

3. Yes. I think Ghirri created a kind of rubric within the language of photography which highlighted the fundamental components in composition and palette, and alerted us to the space between the photographer and technology which you might define as artistic will or capacity. He is a corner-stone in our practice.

3. Ghirri’s approach is still very relevant to contemporary photography, but it should be treated today more as an accepted reality, than a point of discussion or research. The challenge today is perhaps not so much to research what makes photography unique, but how practitioners can apply this uniqueness and create work that is able to stand out against the multitude of images that surround us in our daily lives.

1. With the Magnum-Photographer Ernst Haas the Austrian history of photography has an outstanding personality in the world of imaginative rhetoric: his view on post-war Vienna from the late 1940s pictures an imaginative cosmos of society, architecture, life and circumstances in a crucial geographical and historical situation. From the younger generation I would like to mention Leo Kandl, who’s pictorial research focusses on the specific ambience of individual persons.

2. For me Ghirri talks about very intimate, hermetic, personal things and situations; Austrian photographers maybe understand themselves as more extroverted, more involved.

3. I appreciate Ghirri’s personal picture language with its ambiguity and “open-ended” narrative. Today photography actually does not trust so much in these strategies and potentials, but is more defined by technical, optical, conceptual issues. Maybe there should be a bit more enigmatic touch of Ghirri in today’s photography.
