Open call 2022: i progetti selezionati / selected projects

We can finally announce the winners of our Open Call!

Fotografia Europea continues to promote the participation of European or European-based artists and curators with a Call that invites them to submit photographic projects that creatively explore the theme of the year, An invincible summer.

A consolidated event that answers to a real need of the contemporary art world, proved by the large participation that goes on every year from all over Europe.

The artistic direction selected the projects of three artists:

  • Isola by Simona Ghizzoni (Italia, 1977) deals with the artist’s relationship with her family of origin, after moving to his grandparents’ house in the Apennines of Emilia during the first lockdown. However, it also describes her relationship with her new family and especially with her son, in these extraordinary circumstances in which he is growing up.
  • Usus Fructus Abusus by Gloria Oyarzabal (Spagna, 1971) reflects on the concept of the museum and the conflict between history, collective memory, rights and ethics, which stems from a largely plundering colonial past. Museums have been and often remain the beneficiaries of Europe’s violent expansion and exploitation, responsible for a stereotyped imaginary. Ownership, restitution, reparation, recontextualisation: it is on these issues that the artist questions herself.
  • Paradise by Maxime Riché (France, 1982) focuses on the town of Paradise, California, which is ravaged by fires every year. The photographer met those who have decided to rebuild their “paradise” in a place that now seems brutally inhospitable using infrared film, whose blazing colours break through the tenuous normality of a life they are trying to rebuild. Navigating the boundaries of documentary and fiction, Paradise’s narrative gives us a glimpse of the next place that will have to go through this healing after a disaster whose causes are, increasingly, human. But it also shows our strength and tells the story of our journey: that of our resilience, of our human condition.

Special thanks to Iren, already Fotografia Europea Special Sponsor, which supports new talents and new gazes at contemporary reality through the International Open Call.

We wait for you in Reggio Emilia to discover all the exhibitions of the new edition of Fotografia Europea from 29 April to 12 June 2022!
