“In nessun altro luogo c’è una tale attenzione al cinema come in India. Il mondo immaginario del cinema filtra nella realtà e influenza la vita di ogni giorno, incidendo sulla percezione e l’immaginazione delle persone.”
Con questo in mente, e senza volersi concentrare sulle più ovvie manifestazione della cultura cinematografica indiana come i grandi manifesti della Bollywood più appariscente, Max Pinckers ha trasformato le strade di Bombay nel suo personale set fotografico, invitando i passanti a prendere parte al suo lavoro. “Le persone in questi scatti scelgono autonomamente il ruolo che vogliono recitare, quale personaggio interpretare davanti alla macchina e al suo fotografo straniero”, spiega l’artista. “Consci del potere delle immagini, i partecipanti danno alla macchina fotografica tutti loro stessi: si immaginano sul grande schermo dei loro sogni, mostrando un comune mondo visivo di riferimento e creando autonomamente i propri brevi momenti di tensione e incredulità”.

“Nowhere else is there such devotion to cinema as in India. This fictional world seeps into reality and influences everyday life, dictating the perception and imagination of its audience.” With this in mind, and instead of focusing on the more obvious manifestations of Indian movie culture, such as advertising billboards or Bollywood bling, Max Pinckers turned the streets of Bombay into his own set, inviting passers-by to participate. “The people in these images become actors by choosing their own roles, which they perform for the camera and its western operator,” he explains. “Conscious of the power of images, they give it their all, reflecting on their silver screen dreams by embracing their collective visual world and creating their own brief moments of suspension of disbelief.”
