Gianni Berengo Gardin

Dall’archivio al mondo. L’atelier di Gianni Berengo Gardin

curated by Alessandra Mauro and Susanna Berengo Gardin, scientific coordinator Laura Gasparini, in collaboration with Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia and Contrasto

The exhibition investigates how an archive becomes the space for reflection and creation, not only a place where the memory of one’s work is stored. This will offer the opportunity to observe the creative process of the famed Italian photographer by exploring his work tools: his cameras and equipment, as well as his contact prints, documents, videos showing the atelier, the archives and the works of one of the most important Italian photographers.

Gianni Berengo Gardin was born in Santa Margherita Ligure in 1930. After moving to Milan, he devoted himself to photojournalism, social investigations, architecture documentation and landscape description. In 1979 he started collaborating with Renzo Piano, for whom he documented the different stages of his architectural projects. In 1995 he won the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. He concentrated mostly on books publication (over 250) and on exhibitions (over 200 solos). Contrasto recently published Il libro dei libri (2014), which collects all the volumes produced by this master of photography; Manicomi (2015), Venezia e le grandi navi (2015) and Vera fotografia (2016). Gianni Berengo Gardin’s entire body of work and archives are managed by Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia, Milan.
