Alessandra Calò, Fotoscopia

curated by Irene Russo

Fifty years since its construction, Santa Maria Nuova Hospital has decided to undergo a photographic examination in order to bring to light some fragments of history. Alessandra Calò’s “photoscopic” images, taken with the aid of iPhoneography and printed on glass using old-fashioned methods, are not mere representations of reality subject to the limitations of digital distance. Instead, they go back in time and recapture that soothing feeling of touch – the warmth of a skilful technique like that of a doctor who understands immediately on touching the patient.

The hospital is a body made up of innumerable lives, stories of men and women on the frontline or who have always worked behind the scenes. What emerges is a grandiose project born in the Fifties whose pillars mirror the harmony of the human skeleton. The glass plates tell of the growing ability to scrutinize the most unfathomably microscopic space. The stunning beauty of the diagnostic methods shines through the displays, celebrating the achievements of human ingenuity and the exploratory drive of Santa Maria Hospital.

Now temporarily on special display at the Galleria Parmeggiani, the hospital will be showing ‘its insides’ through photography. A piece of history is being preserved in ‘glass containers’ so that it may last in time and be available for viewing by the community.

BIO

Alessandra Calò divides her time between her desk and photography and dedicates herself to the latter with passion and curiosity, experimenting with new languages and using the technique of reappropriation for the revival of a historical memory that reconstructs the fabric of our memories.

The projects she had pursued include her contribution to the Italo Rota temporary museum, Gli oggetti ci parlano (Objects speak to us); Women in Fluxus for the Palazzo Magnani Foundation; and Antipodi Apolidi (Stateless antipodes) for Spazio Gerra.

From 2009 to 2013 she worked on a project titled NDT, an investigation into the history of her family using x-rays and photographs; the installation has been exhibited in Italy, France and Germany.

In 2013 she created Vite Senza Fine (Endless lives) for the inauguration of the High-Tech Centre in Reggio Emilia: her works, exhibited alongside those of Fabio Boni and Fabrizio Cicconi, tell the story of the Officine Meccaniche Reggiane (the old mechanical factories of Reggio Emilia) by portraying the faces of the men and women who once worked there. The project was nominated for the 2014 Premio Celeste award.

In the same year, Alessandra Calò participated with other photographers in a publication project entitled In t’la Nudda, a social study on the Reggio Emilia Apennines (published by Edizioni ABao Aqu) and in The Dance of Resistance – Adolf Reichwein, a Biography in Movement project for the State Ballet School of Berlin, conducted in collaboration with the German artist Roman Kroke.

In 2014, her project Secret Garden was selected by Gigliola Foschi and Elio Grazioli and won the OFF section of Fotografia Europea. After its preview it Reggio Emilia it was exhibited in various art galleries in Italy, France and the Netherlands.
