Güle Güle
Güle Güle (Goodbye in Turkish) is a personal account of Istanbul and the dramatic changes taking place in the city and in Turkish society.
Gentrification, the critical situation of vulnerable social classes, the growing discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, the massive influx of Syrian refugees and the endemic Kurdish issue are just some of the realities behind the topics portrayed. Documenting marginalised communities is a revelatory process that allows engagement with the human substrate, one which for us represents the most sincere expression of a country, lying beneath the superficial, widely accepted social ‘façade’.
The images are the result of the many relationships established with people and places in order to penetrate the complexity of the city. The choice of a non-linear narrative is designed to be the most coherent tool to convey the uncontrollable force expressed by the multiple microcosms that make up the social fabric, driven by a progressivist urge, constantly targeted by an authoritarian regime that acts overbearingly to oppose and suppress it.
Images taken in different situations are brought into dialogue and their interaction offers a new way of reading these stories, raising questions and creating a short circuit that reveals otherwise unimaginable scenarios.
