Show Case. L’archivio esposto

SHOW CASE. L’ARCHIVIO ESPOSTO

Collezione Maramotti was closed to the public for many months in 2020 due to the pandemic; in conjunction with the opening of the 2021 Fotografia Europea Festival (inspired by Gianni Rodari’s poetic invitation: “On the Moon and on Earth / Make way for Dreamers!”) and as a follow-up to the 2019 exhibition Rehang: Archives, the Maramotti Collection has therefore decided to offer visitors an even closer look at its permanent exhibition, through a selection of documents and materials from its library and archive.

Stretching through the galleries that permanently house over two hundred works from the 1950s to the present, a series of temporary vitrines will present photos, documents, drawings, artists’ books and ephemera from some of the artists on view, to provide broader context for their work and fresh perspective on the exhibition.

In keeping with Rodari’s poem, we have singled out artists whose work is a bridge between our own world and the metaphysical one of dreams. This oneiric theme runs through the rooms of the permanent collection, with archival materials that show, on the first floor, the vibrant artistic ferment of the 1960s and 1970s in Italy, and on the second floor, the energy and creativity of the New York painting scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

The materials on view are related to works by Alighiero Boetti, Eric Fischl, Ellen Gallagher, Eliseo Mattiacci, Mario Schifano, Julian Schnabel and Cesare Tacchi, and round out the digital content that has been available in the rooms via QR codes since 2020, to offer new insights on the collection.
