Oliviero Toscani

Over 50 years of magnificent failures

curated by Nicolas Ballario
organized by Arthemisia

To consider Oliviero Toscani a failure is a bit challenging, but since he refers to himself as such we can only but believe him.
Over 50 years of magnificent failures is in fact the name of the exhibition that opens on April 14 th at the MAR of Ravenna, which presents several decades of the photographer’s work.
One cannot but think that failure is a prospect for him, because to feel accomplished would mean to stop, and it is impossible to imagine him still.
Toscani through photography has opened a global discussion on issues such as racism, the death penalty, AIDS and war.
Among the works on display is the famous Bacio between a priest and a nun (1991), Tre Cuori White / Black / Yellow (1996), No-Anorexia (2007) and many others.
The show in Ravenna will include the Human Race series, a socio-political, cultural and anthropological study for which Toscani held photo shoots in dozens of cities around the world to investigate the morphology of human beings. His goal was to see how we are made, what faces we have, understand the differences, and, as he says, to “take somatic imprints and capture the faces of humanity”.
Other works presented are those created for the fashion world, which Oliviero Toscani has contributed to radically change: from the famous photographs of Donna
Jordan to those of Monica Bellucci; and many portraits of the greatest cultural protagonists from the 70s onwards among which: Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Carmelo Bene and Federico Fellini.
