In the Twentieth century women made decisive advances in all spheres of public and private community life. From the suffragettes of the early 1900s up to the feminist movement of the Seventies, women’s history is marked by a series of conquests but also by ongoing problems. There has grown an awareness of how long and difficult the path to the achievement of rights is, including the right to vote, which is crucial for women’s freedom and full citizenship. Woman stands for the idea of regeneration, of life, protection and universal motherhood; she is the custodian of the domestic hearth and the driving force of the family, the foundational nucleus of society. Today’s challenges are perhaps even more difficult because they go beyond the strictly legal sphere and concern society, culture and mindsets as well. The exhibit entitled ‘DALLA PARTE DELLE DONNE. Tra azione e partecipazione’ (FROM THE WOMEN’S SIDE. Between action and participation) aims to provide a visual path in the form of a group exhibit of contemporary art devoted to the topic of women, increasingly engaged in action and participation in every sphere of social, economic, cultural, artistic and political life.

‘FROM THE WOMEN’S SIDE. Between action and participation’ brings together the art and performance research of roughly twenty Italian and foreign female artists already accredited and established on the international scene. Their investigations focus on the topics of social action and political engagement in the community, of the female identity in relation to family life and the citizenry and of the public and the private spheres. The artists play on the theme of contemporary female iconography as a “common, shared and exposed identity”, in a photographic, mythical and erotic journey, read and reinterpreted “from the women’s side”.  The artists render many visions and interpretations of women’s contemporary role in society, offering a complex and multifaceted reflection on the meaning of participant action and communal life. Through the photographic images of these women artists we can see the particular slant of, and the part played by, female participation as it materializes in a tangible event within a space that is lived, exposed and shared.
