Il cambiamento è ovunque. Tutti lo invocano nella convinzione che questo rappresenti l’unico modo di fare un vero salto in avanti, cancellando il passato e aprendo la via a epoca nuova. Ma il cambiamento è sempre in atto e la fotografia ne è il testimone impietoso.
Da sempre la fotografia rappresenta l’attimo e fissa uno stato immutabile. Ma l’insieme degli attimi nel tempo, nella realtà non fanno altro che marcare il mutamento continuo del mondo che ci circonda e di fatto, a volte, anticiparlo. Il tema del Festival della Fotografia Europea 2013 porta alla nostra attenzione questo curioso fenomeno, già individuato da Roland Barthes e descritto come “futuro anteriore”. La fotografia contiene già in sé il senso del cambiamento, e, nel momento che la osserviamo, il suo contenuto – il referente, sia esso un paesaggio, una cosa, una persona – è già cambiato. Ed il fotografo, nell’attimo in cui scatta, se ne assume, inconsciamente, la responsabilità; una responsabilità individuale come parte di una responsabilità sociale, perché oggi si scattano molte più foto di prima e la documentazione del divenire – delle cose, degli uomini, della società – fissato in un attimo, è di fatto una lunga, infinita, sequenza quasi filmica che, attraverso i diversi stati, ci suggerisce il nostro futuro.
Nel Festival, il cambiamento passa attraverso lo sguardo di tanti fotografi di diverse nazionalità, che hanno colto e segmentato gli aspetti fisico-ambientali, quelli dei sentimenti o della socialità, con immagini che lasciano un segno ma al tempo stesso ci spingono a riflettere su ciò che sarà. Non sono casuali le parole chiave della rassegna: straniamento, fiducia, sorpresa e visione.
Le stesse parole che oggi segnano il nostro vivere e che vorremmo riempissero di significato il nostro futuro. E le fotografie sono le chiavi che ci aiutano a leggerci dentro, senza dimenticare, senza cancellare, ma immaginando il domani.

Change is everywhere. Everyone is calling for it in the belief that this is the only way to make a real leap forward, erasing the past and paving the way for a new era. But change is always afoot, and photography is its merciless witness.
Photography has always represented the moment and fixed an unchanging state. But the totality of moments in time, in reality, do nothing more than mark the continuous change of the world around us and in fact, at times, anticipate it.
The theme of the 2013 Fotografia Europea Festival brings to our attention this curious phenomenon, already identified by Roland Barthes and described as the “anterior future”. Photography already contains within itself the sense of change, and, at the moment we observe it, its content – the referent, be it a landscape,
a thing, a person – has already changed. And the photographer, in the instant in which he takes the shot, unconsciously takes responsibility for it; an individual responsibility as part of a social responsibility, because today many more photos are taken than before and the documentation of the becoming – of things, of men, of society – fixed in an instant, is in fact a long, infinite, almost filmic sequence that, through different states, suggests our future.
In the Festival, change passes through the gaze of many photographers of different nationalities, who have captured and segmented the physical-environmental aspects, those of feelings or sociality, with images that leave a mark but at the same time prompt us to reflect on what will be. The key words of the exhibition are no coincidence: estrangement, trust, surprise and vision. The same words that mark our lives today and that we would like to fill our future with meaning. And photographs are the keys that help us read inside, without forgetting, without erasing, but imagining tomorrow.
