Dal 2011 ho fotografato e filmato i membri di questa comunit\u00e0, combinando immagini, video e interviste per mostrare come l'identit\u00e0 nativa non sia qualcosa di fisso, ma una rappresentazione in continua evoluzione, che si ridefinisce ad ogni generazione.<\/p>\n<p>I Lumbee, con circa 55.000 membri, sono la pi\u00f9 grande trib\u00f9 riconosciuta dallo stato a est del Mississippi. Il 18 dicembre 2025 sono stati riconosciuti a livello federale come la 575\u00aa trib\u00f9 negli Stati Uniti, dopo 137 anni di attivismo e lotta persistente. Questa \u2018correzione\u2019 tanto attesa di un\u2019ingiustizia storica, ha portato oggi le questioni indigene a un livello nazionale, consens\u00ectendo ai Lumbee di accedere a risorse che fino ad ora gli sono state negate, tra cui finanziamenti, assistenza sanitaria, alloggio e istruzione.<\/p>\n<p>Tuttavia, questo riconoscimento arriva in un contesto politico polarizzato, plasmato da narrazioni escludenti e dibattiti ancora in corso su chi appartenga alla nazione, che si sono ulteriormente acuito sotto la presidenza di Donald Trump. Mentre lo Stato formalmente riconosce l'identit\u00e0 indigena, permangono complesse sfide sociali e culturali, che hanno a che fare con i temi della rappresentazione e del senso di appartenenza.<\/p>\n<p>A prima vista, le mie fotografie ritraggono una comune citt\u00e0 americana. A uno sguardo pi\u00f9 attento, emergono per\u00f2 strati di identit\u00e0 culturale: segnali stradali, abbigliamento, tatuaggi e spazi domestici riflettono una continua negoziazione tra retaggio culturale e contemporaneit\u00e0. Questi dettagli rivelano come gli stereotipi \u2014 plasmati da film, cultura pop e narrazioni semplificate \u2014 siano stati proiettati sulla comunit\u00e0, influenzando le interazioni quotidiane.<\/p>\n<p>Il titolo del progetto,\u00a0<em><b>You Don\u2019t Look Native to Me<\/b><\/em>, \u00e8 una frase dolorosamente familiare per il popolo Lumbee, che ben racchiude il divario tra percezione interna - come si vedono i nativi - ed esterna - cio\u00e8 come chi non fa parte della comunit\u00e0 li percepisce. The town is the tribal seat of the Lumbee Indian Tribe of North Carolina, the largest state-recognized Native American tribe east of the Mississippi River, which means they are federally unrecognized and therefore have no reservation nor any monetary benefits.\nI am tracing their ways of self-representation, transformed through history, questions of identity with which they are confronted on a daily basis, and their reawakening pride in being Native. The work consists of portraits, along with landscapes and places, interiors, still lives, and situations. The aesthetic framework that is presented ofers clues \u2013 sometimes subtle, sometimes loud \u2013 for imparting a feeling for their everyday lives.\nMy work engages an unfamiliar mix of concepts: a Native American tribe whose members are ignored by the outside world, who do not wear their otherness on their physique, but who are firm in their identity. Through photography, video and interviews, I am investigating what happens when social and institutional structures break down and people are forced to rely on themselves for their own resources.
