The narrow door

curated by 3/3

The Narrow Door is a project about the uncertain, ambiguous and prolific nature of images and about their potential development from a hypertrophic thematic work concealed in a vacuum-sealed bag.
The images elude the work for which they were originally shot and take on a life of their own, they become ever-changing but temporary, ephemeral forms whose shape is a partial result, a momentary stopping place in a potentially limitless translation.
The thematic core of the work is the recording of ordinary, minimal, humble, negligible and semi-opaque events that reveal themselves during our everyday life and which, due to their discrete grace or unusual nature, enable us, even just for an instant, to catch a glimpse of the tyrannical fabric of the real.

In their closest to 0 degree, the so-called matrix of The Narrow Door, these images appear as complete photos, hermetically sealed, printed on cheap paper, vacuum-packed and stacked like a self-contained packaged product. Through this expedient, the fertile and humble world of everyday revelations – a secret and subjective world open to the revelations that come from a universe proscribed by efficiency and social performance – is preserved and kept away from the public gaze.
The images, however, break free from the seclusion of the matrix and give birth to the installation.  The images develop autonomously; they become fertile and transform into ever-changing prints and objects: prints on different surfaces, from glass to precious paper, from leaded cabinets to Xerox prints, projections, collages, posters and publications that have never been produced.

Every original photo from the matrix undergoes endless variations which free the original project from any fixed coordinate. The installation turns the images themselves into fragments of ruins and tracks them along a movement of perpetual fall or, on the contrary, inside a hypnotic choreography at risk of degenerating into an ostentatious vacuum (that also sends them adrift).
If the focus and reflection on everyday life suggest alternative gazes on reality and new perspectives of subjective vision, then, by analogy, the images of the matrix, within the temporary and circumscribed space of The Narrow door, flourish, come to life, transform and constantly take new forms, driven by an entropic principle that acts as an agent of fertility and vital energy.
