The Palazzo Magnani Foundation and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia are launching an open call to select the new Artistic Director of Fotografia Europea for the next three editions (2027–28–29)

Since 2006, the Festival has transformed Reggio Emilia into a hub for international dialogue on contemporary photography; today, Fotografia Europea looks to the future and invites curators and collectives from around the world to imagine its next phase of development.

Envisioning the future of Fotografia Europea

The new Artistic Director will be called upon to develop a vision capable of building on the legacy established by Fotografia Europea whilst, at the same time, guiding its evolution. The Festival aims to strengthen its international focus, promote research, experimentation and new productions, broaden its dialogue with the city, and devise innovative forms of participation and engagement.

The aim is to transform Fotografia Europea from a festival into a permanent cultural platform, capable of operating throughout the year through exhibitions, research, commissions, educational activities and projects shared with the local community, whilst maintaining the Festival itself as a central event with strong public appeal.

The role

The role involves the Artistic Direction of the 2027, 2028 and 2029 editions and includes, amongst other key activities:

  • defining the Festival’s concept and annual theme in collaboration with the organisers;
  • selecting exhibition projects and curators;
  • developing the Festival’s curatorial vision and annual photography programme;
  • collaborating on the development of the programme of interdisciplinary events;
  • publicly presenting the Festival’s editions.

Who can apply

The selection process is open to individuals and curatorial collectives, including informal ones, with at least five years’ experience in artistic direction, curatorship or similar roles, and with a good knowledge of English (knowledge of Italian is an advantage).
