fusion-text-2\"><p><em>Landscaping<\/em>\u00a0include\u00a0<strong>scatti in bianco e nero<\/strong>\u00a0realizzati durante lunghi viaggi in auto lungo\u00a0<strong>la costa sud-occidentale dell\u2019Africa<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn\u00a0<em>Landscape and Power<\/em>\u00a0(2002), WJT Mitchell sostiene che<strong>\u00a0il \u201cpaesaggio\u201d dovrebbe essere considerato un verbo anzich\u00e9 un nome<\/strong>, qualcosa che modella e viene modellato dall\u2019agire sociale e politico. Prendendo le distanze dall\u2019idea di \u201cvista\u201d piuttosto che di \u201cspazio reale\u201d, l\u2019artista attua una fusione con il luogo stesso. Il \u201cpaesaggio\u201d non \u00e8 la geografia o lo \u201cspazio l\u00e0 fuori\u201d. \u00c8 gi\u00e0 di per s\u00e9 un artificio.<br \/>\nNel suo lavoro, l\u2019artista si ritrova ancora una volta a disconoscere il termine nel tentativo di\u00a0<strong>sottrarre le sue fotografie a convenzioni stereotipate<\/strong>. Parlare di paesaggio in termini di bellezza, o al contrario di bruttezza, significa\u00a0<strong>osservare invece che partecipare<\/strong>, ridurre il luogo a un concetto piuttosto che a un\u2019esperienza vissuta.<br \/>\nNella prima bozza di questa testimonianza, l\u2019artista descriveva la costa atlantica come arida e spazzata dal vento. In seguito, si \u00e8 resa conto che la sua rappresentazione riproponeva involontariamente le narrazioni coloniali della \u201cterra vuota\u201d, che vedevano l\u2019uomo di frontiera come intrepido esploratore votato alla conquista e alla scoperta. Molte citt\u00e0 del Namaqualand sono nate dopo la \u201cscoperta\u201d del rame a Okiep nel 1685.
