COMMON LIFE. IMAGES FOR THE COMMUNITY OF CITIZENS

Crediamo di poter ormai dire, dopo cinque edizioni in cui si sono affrontati i temi più diversi, che la fotografia non è mai solo descrittiva o informativa, anche quando sembra limitarsi a quello. La fotografia, come abbiamo ribadito nelle precedenti edizioni, ha anche un corpo suo, un suo tempo, rivela uno sguardo sulle cose. Ebbene, ora siamo a dire, appunto, che la fotografia non è solo documento e testimonianza del vivere comune, che noi qui vogliamo indicare come la volontà di mettere in rilievo ciò che ci accumuna insieme a ciò che ci differenzia, ma è anche ciò che mostra la realtà e la vita così come sono. Questo significa da un lato che, come ogni volta, invitiamo a guardare diversamente perfino il dovere civile, l’idea di appartenenza a una comunità, l’impegno di essere cittadini attivi. Noi pensiamo che la fotografia possa servire anche a questo, a chiedere uno sforzo in più di visione e di pensiero, su ogni cosa. È la forza dell’immagine ferma, cioè dell’immagine che ferma lo spettatore a osservare meglio e a riflettere. Dall’altro lato significa che la fotografia ci richiama anche alla realtà, non ci lascia schizzare via per fantasie eccessive e voli teorici che rispecchiano solo le aspettative o le pretese di chi le esprime. ‘Comune’ vuol dire anche questo: reale, concreto, presente; non nel senso basso dello scontato, ma in quello della scoperta del reale, dell’incanto, così come l’abbiamo definita due edizioni fa: “del vedere altro”, appunto.
Vita comune. Immagini per la cittadinanza è declinato in diversi nuclei di riflessione: cambiamento, luoghi comuni, partecipazione, differentemente.

We believe we can now say, after five editions in which the most diverse themes were addressed, that photography is never merely descriptive or informative, even when it seems to limit itself to that. Photography, as we have reiterated in previous editions, also has a body of its own, its own time, it reveals a view of things. Well, now we are saying, precisely, that photography is not only a document and testimony of common living, which we want to refer to here as the desire to highlight what accumulates us together with what differentiates us, but it is also what shows reality and life as they are. This means on the one hand that, as every time, we invite people to look differently even at civic duty, the idea of belonging to a community, the commitment to be active citizens. We think that photography can also serve this purpose, to ask for an extra effort of vision and thought, about everything.
It is the power of the still image, that is, of the image that stops the viewer to observe better and to reflect. On the other hand, it means that photography also calls us back to reality, does not leave us to splash out on excessive fantasies and theoretical flights that only reflect the expectations or pretensions of those who express them. ‘Common’ also means this: real, concrete, present; not in the low sense of the taken for granted, but in that of the discovery of the real, of the enchantment, as we defined it two editions ago: “of seeing something else”, precisely.
Common Life. Images for Citizenship is declined in several nuclei of reflection: change, common places, participation, differently.
