Party è nato nella mente di Cristina De Middel dopo un primo viaggio in Cina nel 2012, intrapreso con l’intenzione di “fare fotografia, rispondere con la macchina fotografica a qualsiasi cosa attirasse la mia attenzione senza alcune intenzione di spiegare o analizzare”.
L’artista è tornata da questo viaggio “con una grande quantità di fotografie difficili da organizzare ed editare, poiché l’unico comun denominatore che avevano era lo stupore nel mio sguardo”.
Party è un libro fotografico costruito partendo dal “Libretto rosso” di Mao, ed è un volume costruito attraverso “nuove” frasi e caratterizzato da uno spirito libero che in qualche modo ci mostra la realtà odierna della Cina.
Cristina De Middel usa lo scheletro del libro di Mao per creare una narrativa nuova e particolare, e come dice l’autrice:”Ho deciso di adattare questo volume storico-politico ai tempi moderni, cancellando e nascondendo parti di testo che non sono più attuali e evidenziandone altre che, per me, forniscono oggi un ritratto più accurato della Repubblica Popolare Cinese del XXI secolo”.

Party was conceived by Cristina De Middel after a first trip to China in 2012, undertaken in the aim of “making photography, of reacting with the camera to whatever caught my attention, without any attempt to explain or analyze.”
She returned “with a large series of photographs that were hard to classify and edit, since the only common denominator was my own astonishment.” Party is a photobook built on the foundation of Mao’s Little Red Book. It is a book with “new” quotations and a free spirit that somehow shows us what China is today. Cristina uses the skeleton of Mao’s little book to create a particular narrative.
As Cristina herself puts it: “I decided to adapt this historic political statement to modern times by censoring and hiding the parts of the text that are no longer in force and highlighting some other redesigned sentences that, for me, form a more accurate portrait of the Peoples Republic of China in the twentieth-first century.”
